Morning Rituals
by Debbie Forbes

How do you start your day? Jump out of bed, toss the alarm clock across the room, wolf down some breakfast, do the fewest things that you can to get to work on time? We are all guilty of this at one point or another. It is very hard to find the time to do all that we are supposed to fit in a 24 hour period. I have taken to getting up earlier to get some very important things done before 8am. This is my time with myself. Here is why I crawl out of bed early to do my rituals.

The oldest religions in the world have recognized that the human race in and of itself aspires to two things: Happiness and wellness. To that end, the truly enlightened religions (not just those looking out for their own good and prosperity) came up with many techniques and habits that would keep the body and mind in perfect working order. These religions and the indigenous peoples that practiced these habits were doing what we have coined holistic, alternative, natural and complimentary medicine. Imagine, before it was fashionable!

It has become apparent to me that most times, the simple most unaffected way is the best. When practicing these daily habits or "rituals" your health and well being will improve greatly. I like to use the word rituals as it signals to me something more spiritual and beyond reproach. Use whatever word makes sense to you. These rituals are basic. They are the antidote to the "quick fix", "fountain of youth" programs that we all know and hate because we have spent so much money and gotten little in return.

  1. Reverence - Begin your day before you even get out of bed. Turn off the alarm. Gaze out the window, enjoy the singing of the birds. Be glad that you can afford air conditioning, a view of the water or just the fact that you are lucky enough to spend your time in Florida. Here's a little affirmation to start your day: " I am thankful for the day before me. I look at wonder that which is before me." At this point, realize that you should wear your soul on the outside, not the inside. Let all the world see what you are. Be humble but strong and kind.

  2. Body Awareness - In our busy lives, we seem to think of the body as something the mind controls. Your body and your mind are one unit. Always and forever. This I promise you. As above, so below. You will manifest your emotions in your body. Stressed all the time? Guess where it will show up. Love your body each morning and let the mind wander to what you are doing. Be in the moment. Take a simple, natural oil or cream. I have the luxury of using jojoba which is one of the best oils to use, but get something with very few ingredients in it. Something moisturizing, good for your skin. Sesame, grapeseed, and olive oil will do too. (Contact me if you need help here). Start at your feet and moisturize slowly. Feel your toes. Work that knee over. Feels a bit tight in this hip. I remember this belly button. Isn't it cute? Mom used to tell me that's where I came off the machine! Work your way up. This is a good time for women to do the self breast exam (It's breast cancer awareness month) Put some on your face and if it is an oil put it in your hair. Trust me on this. You will love this ritual. Just wait until you start adding essential oils. Addictive! This only takes five to ten minutes and makes you more aware of yourself.

  3. Move! - You have just completed your mini-massage. Your hair is being conditioned as we speak, your skin is revved up and glistening. Time to move that body. Get the stiffness out. Some people will enjoy yoga postures. Others will like to do stretches. Perhaps you prefer to put a hat on and run or go to the gym. I find that if I attempt to exercise in the evening it will never get done. I will rationalize in 15 different ways why I am too tired. Do it in the morning. Get it done. You will start to crave it. There are a plethora of books, videos, magazines etc. out there to help you with exercises. Some sites I have found to be helpful are www.bodyforlife.com; www.nutrio.com; www.workoutsforwomen.com. Find what works for you.

  4. Shower time: Do your thing. Wash out your hair. Feels great now, doesn't it? Here's my newest thing to do. Having a problem, concern or just need some guidance? I ask myself a one sentence question. Something like " How can I work smarter, not harder?" Something of the like. What ever your question is ask yourself the same thing in the shower for two weeks, everyday. So far they have been answered! Good luck to you.

  5. Please eat breakfast. - I know, I know, it makes you sick, you don't have time, whatever.... There are tons of good shakes out there that you can whip up while shaving or putting your makeup on. How hard is it to eat 2 pieces of toast with some cottage cheese? Get a good dose of protein and carbs and watch out for the sugar. Drink a big glass of water. Oh, and please drink your water. Dehydration is like an epidemic here in Florida. I see people who are dehydrated every day. It does happen. Pull the skin on your wrist. Does it bounce right back in place or meander its way back to where it was? If it meanders you are dehydrated.
I think that is enough for now! I encourage you to think of these practices as the tools you use each day to nurture yourself. By being more aware of the person that resides in this body and mind, you can improve the quality of your life and the way that you treat those around you. The most important thing about adopting "rituals" is that your practices nurture you and that you enjoy them enough that you want to do it daily. Remember it is never too late to start!
